Doug Austin is the photographer behind Austin's Uptown Studio.
A professional since 1980, Doug worked for several studios before
going solo in 1986. He has been a member of Professional
Photographers of Sacramento Valley since 1987, and
first won Wedding Photographer of the Year from that association
in 1989. Since then he has gone on to win the same award two more
times, and has been in the top three finishers many times since.
He also captured the coveted Photographer of the Year award
in 1992, which requires entering images in multiple categories
during the course of the year. Doug
achieved the Image of the Year in 1996 with a romantic
wedding image photographed near Sierra College.
Doug
has served his professional association as a board member for
many years, and was elected as its president in 1998. He has also
been active in the North
Sacramento Chamber of Commerce since 1989, also serving
as its president in 1998. He has been one of the key players in
the revitalization of the North Sacramento community during the
last decade, helping transform Del Paso Blvd. into a thriving
Arts District, filled with art galleries, restaurants, and artist
live-work spaces. In December of 2004 he recieved the "Business
of the Year" award from the chamber.
Doug also helped form the Dixieanne Area Neighborhood Association
( DANA) in 1999, and has since served first as Vice
President, and lately as President of that group in an
effort to help enhance the community and improve city services.
He opened his first studio on Del Paso Blvd. in 1995 and
has since expanded his services to include children and families,
to complement his long experience with weddings, glamour, and
business promotional photography. In early 2004 he moved into
newer and bigger quarters just down the street, at Arden and Del
Paso, (1516 Del Paso Blvd.) where he intends to stay for many
years to come.
Doug graduated from CSUS in 1972 with a BA in Spanish Literature
and a minor in Music, and has traveled extensively throughout
Latin America during the seventies before becoming a photographer,
and now uses his knowledge of Latin music to host a regular Monday
morning radio musical variety program called "South of the
Border" on Nevada City community station KVMR (89.5FM and
on the web at KVMR.org
, 10AM-noon, first Monday of every month).
